How to Protect Your Data If Your iPhone Is Lost or Stolen

It is unfortunate to lose an iPhone. The mere thought of not finding your device is enough to run chills down your spine, let alone the feeling of actually losing it. Apart from being an expensive and fancy piece of technology, your iPhone also carries a lot of valuable data that can be misused if it falls into the wrong hands. That’s why Apple has built some robust tools for iOS that can help keep your data safe, even if your device is misplaced or snatched by a thief. All you need to do is take some preventive measures.

This blog post by your friends at RTC Electronics will help you understand what should be done to protect your data if your iPhone is lost or stolen. Let’s take a look.

1) Enable Find My iPhone

The first thing to do (if you haven’t done it yet) is to enable ‘Find My iPhone’ on your device. ‘Find My iPhone’ is an app that lets you instantly see your phone’s location by logging onto a browser. Follow the steps mentioned below to set up this app.

  • Start at your Home screen
  • Tap Settings > [your name] > iCloud. For users of iOS 10.2 or earlier versions, go to Settings > iCloud
  • Tap ‘Find My iPhone’ (at the bottom of the menu)
  • Slide to turn on ‘Find My iPhone’ and Send Last Location

2) Turn On the ‘Lost Mode’

Once ‘Find My iPhone’ is activated, you can find your device and take additional actions to either recover your device or keep your information safe by turning on ‘Lost Mode’. If your iPhone is lost or stolen and you should-

  • Sign in to com/find on a PC or Mac (you can also use ‘Find My iPhone’ app on another iPhone)
  • Open Find My iPhone app and select your device to view its last location on the map. If the location shows your device is nearby, you can make a call on your number to locate it.
  • Turn on ‘Lost Mode’ of your device to remotely lock it with a passcode and keep track of your device’s location.
  • You can also use Lost Mode to display a custom message on the phone’s screen with instructions on where to return the phone (in the case, someone has found your device)

3) Use Settings to Delete Data After Incorrect Password Entries

Apple offers several settings for security purposes so that your data is not misused even if the device is lost. One option to really make sure that a thief can’t get your data is to erase all the information if the passcode is entered incorrectly ten times. However, people who are not good at remembering passwords or passcodes should be careful before taking this step.

To enable this setting, follow these steps:

  • Go to Settings
  • Tap Touch ID & Passcode or Face ID & Passcode (depending on the feature your device offers)
  • Slide to turn on ‘Erase Data’ (it will turn green when on)

Even if your iPhone is lost, you can rest assured that the thieves won’t be able to access your personal information as ten unsuccessful attempts to unlock the phone will automatically delete all data.

4) Remove Your Debit/ Credit Card Details from Apple Pay

The next thing to do is to remove your debit or credit card details from Apple Pay (if you have set up Apple Pay on your iPhone). The best part is that Apple Pay is a secure app which uses Touch ID or Face ID systems to function, thus making it unlikely for anyone to use your card without your permission. But it is better safe than sorry.

You can remotely delete your payment card details from Apply Pay easily by logging onto to iCloud. If you get your phone back, you can simply add the details again. To remove card details, follow these steps:

  • Go to iCloud.com from a web browser
  • Log in by entering your log in credentials
  • Click on Settings
  • Select ‘Apple Pay’ under ‘My Devices’ section at the bottom of the page
  • Click on ‘Remove All’

5) Change Passwords of Accounts Linked to Your iPhone

Your phone is one place where you access all accounts of your digital life such as Email, Instagram, Netflix and Online Payment Gateways. That’s why changing the password of all accounts linked to your phone is necessary after the device is stolen. Use a PC, Mac or any other iPhone to access your online accounts and change the passwords immediately. Make sure the new password is no where similar to the old passwords to avoid hackers from figuring out your new password with the help of the old one.

6) Remotely Erase Your Data with iPhone Apps

If there is no chance of getting your phone back, the last resort is to remotely wipe your data from your device. As mentioned earlier, use ‘Find My iPhone’ app to erase your device. You just need to tap on ‘Erase Phone’ option, next to the option of ‘Lost Mode’. It will prevent anyone else from accessing the data on your missing phone.

Having your iPhone lost or stolen not only costs you a loss of hundreds or thousands of dollars but also makes your personal data vulnerable to theft and misuse. Although the monetary loss is almost impossible to get back, your data can be protected by taking a few steps before and after the phone goes missing.

To protect your information stored on the phone, make sure you follow the above preventive measures suggested by the gadget experts at RTC Electronics. Also, don’t forget to inform the local police and your network operator to track your phone through IMEI number and block your mobile number.

5 Strong Reasons to Upgrade Your Wireless Router

Wireless routers have become an integral part of every household. From allowing access to your social media accounts on your smartphone to playing your favourite games on gaming consoles, these gadgets let you to connect multiple devices and enjoy smooth data sailing. However, it is not necessary that your Wi-Fi router will function as perfectly as it used to when you first purchased it. New features, designs and interfaces along with new apps that require improved technology for compatibility indicate that it is time for an upgrade.

Many users believe that their old router is sufficient for their devices as they are satisfied with the internet speed. But there are several other reasons that make a router upgrade compulsory. Let’s take a look at them.

1) Improved Signal Strength Everywhere in Your Home

People often experience that the internet connectivity is better in the room where their router is placed whereas the signal strength is weaker in other rooms. This is a common problem faced by users because of an underpowered router. Older versions of wireless routers fail to provide powerful signal evenly in all parts of a house, sometimes compelling people to buy Wi-Fi extenders. If you are experiencing these symptoms, then you should consider upgrading your home network by switching to a newer version of wireless routers. It will help you improve signal strength everywhere in your home and eliminate the problem of spotty connections.

2) Increased Home Network Security

Old Wi-Fi devices lack WPA (Wireless Protected Access), a basic network security technology, and run with the older WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) instead. But this can hamper the security of the devices connected to your router because WPA offers significantly better security protection than WEP as it is more technically advanced. This is a strong reason that indicates you must consider upgrading your old wireless device or else your valuable online data can be hacked.

3) Faster Live Streaming

If buffering and low-definition video has become a common problem whenever you plan to watch a Netflix series, then don’t wait to switch to an improved router. Most online shows, videos and songs are available in high-definition and ultra-high definition and they need a faster internet speed to load. However, out-of-date Wi-Fi devices fail to function on that bandwidth, thus hampering your online entertainment experience, especially when multiple devices are sharing the network. It is likely that your old device is unable to support the high level of performance required. Upgrading the router can avoid these performance issues.

4) Multiple Bands to Decrease Congestion

Most older devices are single-band routers with 802.11b or 802.11g standard that uses the 2.4GHz band. On the other hand, newer devices are dual-band routers with both 802.11g using 2.4 GHz band and 802.11ac standard using a 5GHz band that offer better signal speed and lower signal interface. Upgrading your old wireless device will enable you to have two bands, one for your older gear supporting 2.4 GHz communication and another band for new gear supporting 5 GHz which will decrease congestion and improve the overall performance of your device.

5) More Features to Your Home Network

Adding new features to an out-of-date wireless device can cost substantial amounts of money. However, if you replace your old router with an improved one, you can get all new features along with an updated technology at a relatively lower cost. The new router will not only come with an extended warranty and advanced features such as network backup servers, firewalls and network encryption but also increase the capability of your home network by mitigating connectivity and performance issues.

If you haven’t considered upgrading your wireless router yet hopefully, above-listed reasons will convince you to reassess your decision. After all, every device reaches its end-of-life phase and your wireless router is not immune to this. No matter how satisfied you are with your old router, it will eventually need an update, probably sooner than you think. In the absence of an upgrade, your home W-Fi network will become vulnerable to security flaws and you’ll be deprived of new and useful features. So, it is advisable to get a new device before it’s too late.

4 Easy Tips to Protect Your Online Information 2

Many people use the same username and password for all online accounts they have. This might sound convenient as you don’t have to keep track of different login credentials, but it increases the chances of security threats as a single breach can give hackers access to all your accounts. Also, weak usernames and passwords such as birth dates and mobile numbers can be easily tracked. Protect yourself with multiple layers of security by creating strong and unique login credentials for each online service. Include letters, symbols and numbers in the password to make sure it is difficult to crack.

2) Don’t Give Private Information to Online Services

Sharing personal information such as name, address, phone number and date of birth on several forums and message boards might not be a big deal for some people. But, these details act as puzzle pieces for cybercriminals which can help create a complete picture of the individual. This process is known as doxing. It is a practice of researching and acquiring the private information about an individual or organisation through publicly available databases, social media websites and social engineering for various reasons. To avoid this, don’t readily give out your personal information to any online service, especially when you’re shopping online and be cautious of what you’re sharing on social media.

3) Change Privacy Settings on Social Media

If you have posted several pictures and videos on your social media account, then make sure that it’s visibility is limited to a trustworthy social circle. If not, then change the privacy settings of your account to limit the number of people who can view your posts. Also, keep a tab on your kid’s social media accounts to avoid keeping their safety at risk.

4) Avoid Using Free Public Wi-Fi

Free public Wi-Fi acts like a fishing bait to collect online information of individuals. There are several threats lurking in the background on free public Wi-Fi such as man-in-the-middle attacks, unencrypted networks, malicious hotspots, malware distribution and eavesdropping. If a hacker is using the same Wi-Fi network, he/she can easily track your online activity and use it against you. Therefore, avoid using unprotected wireless networks and if you are, don’t shop online, log in to your social media account or make bank transactions. Always switch to your mobile data or use your wireless USB adapter when doing the above-mentioned online activities.

Not all online platforms offer the security of your personal information. Therefore, be cautious before sharing information online. Use the above-mentioned tips to protect yourself from a security breach and unwanted leaks of private details on the web.
